Ebola is named for the Ebola River in Zaire where the first outbreak occurred in 1976. This disease is transmitted mostly through bodily fluids and interferes with the cells lining the interior of blood vessels. As these walls are damaged, platelets are unable to coagulate and victims succumb to shock.
